All about Parrots!!

                                  The Feathered Elves

A little page dedicated to the feather elves that share my life.....enjoy!!!!

CHICO

Chico is a Blue Crown Mealy Amazon. Chico was my first bird as an adult, and has shared life with me since 2004. Born in August of 2003 in an Iowa breeder facility, I met Chico through the Birdmart website where he was being rehomed by a man who had small children and decided that parrots may not be a good idea for a pet. Like all Amazons, Chico is extremely loud and outgoing and can speak quite well- he can say about 30 different words!!!!  Chico has also mastered playing patty cake and will ask you to "Give five" and expect a response!

 CONNOR

Connor is a Sun Conure. Connor was the second bird who came to live with me, who was purchased by a woman at a bird fair who soon realized that she did not quite have the room for him at home with her five other birds. Hatched July 26, 2006 Connor came to live with me in April of 2007. Sun conures are one of the most rehomed smaller birds due to their large vocal (aka screaming) abilities. Eye catching in color, they embody a big parrot in a little package. Connor's favorite activities include snuggling inside my shirt and beating up his space ship toy.

WESLEY

Wesley is my eighteen year old Greater Sulphur Crested Cockatoo. Wesley is a girl, although I suspect that she was given her name before she was sexed. Although she has went through four homes, she is still a very sweet girl who loves her baths and will tell you  "Let Me Out Right Now" when she wants attention. Born way back in 1990, Wesley came to live with me in December of 2007 and is the most vocal bird of my flock. Like all cockatoos, she needs several hours of attention a day and a forest to keep her happy so she can chew the wood to pieces.

TINKERBELL

Tinkerbell was given to me for free by someone who had purchased her. She was hatched in 2007 and sadly, like many lovebirds, was not hand raised- meaning that she is untame for the most part. She is the peach faced variety and is an excellent mimic of some of the other bird's calls, although on a much quieter level. While Tink is strictly hands off, she is still given love and vocal attention as well as a large cage with multiple toys.

JOEY

Joey is my Senegal, who was born on August 11 of 2006. Joey came to live with me in July of 2008, when he was rehomed by his former owner due to pet restrictions at their new residence.  Senegals are known to be one of the more nippy bird species, and Joey does on occasion let his feelings be known by biting. He is an excellent talker and we are working on trick training where Joey selects colored keys based in my vocal commands.

HARLEY

Harley is a Mexican Red Headed, or Green Cheeked, Amazon. I know little of Harley's past other than his estimated age, which is around eleven years old. He was quite possibly born sometime in 1998. Harley came to live with me in July of 2008 on the same day that Joey did and for the same reasons. Originally acquired from Strictly Feathers in Knoxville, TN, his former owner thought that he was bought there as a baby and returned when the owner was too elderly to care for him and that was when she bought him. Harley is a little more quiet and shy around new people than most Amazons, but loves to jabber and chew up Birdie Bagels.

COSMO

Cosmo is a Swainson's (Blue Mountain) Rainbow Lory. Cosmo was born in 2007, and was rehomed by his former owners due to time limitations. I happened upon Cosmo's ad one day, after spending several months unsuccessfully finding a rainbow lory, which I had been wanting since visiting the ones at the Nashville Zoo. Cosmo came here to live in August of 2008, and is extremely rambunctious as most lories are. He flips on his back to play with toys and loves nothing better than to be given a large dish of water in which he can completely soak himself, his cage, and the floor.

MERLIN

Merlin is my green cheek conure, who came to live with me in December of 2008. Merlin was born sometime in 2005, and was the apple of a college student's eye who decided that she could no longer care for him when she went away to college. Merlin enjoys playing the tapping game, and is happiest when he is allowed to run across the top of his cage (which is why most of the pictures I have of him are of him doing just that). Merlin also likes snuggling with any one who has long hair.

 ERNIE

Ernie is my Timneh African Grey, that was born December 7, 2006. Ernie was originally willed to me, but ended up coming to live with me alot sooner due to his owner finding out that she had asthma. Ernie is the newest addition to my flock, and came to live with me in January of 2009. Ernie is a little fearful of new people, but is an excellent talker, that can whistle Mozart and sing Sesame Street songs. His favorite food is almonds, and he has a "pet" of his own, a teddy bear, that he adores.

CHECKERS

Checkers is my black headed caique, born August 9, 2009. He, along with his good buddy Avery, are the first parrots that I have brought home that were not rehomes but came from a wonderful breeder in upstate Ohio. Checkers loves having his head rubbed, laying on his back, and  hogging all the carrots in the house. Like many caiques, Checkers loves to hair surf and is giving the other birds in the house free lessons!

AVERY

Avery is my Hahns macaw, that was born on June 5, 2009. Avery and Checkers came to live with me on the same day and are the very best of friends. While he is still young, Avery can already say a few words, including "Hi ya", "hello", and "baby". Avery is a food hog, and will eat anything I put in front of him, as long as its not dreaded green peas. Avery likes to untie his toys and spends time trying to keep Checkers out of trouble.
